Tell a story unique to your ethnic culture and history, and you will become a celebrated writer. Chinua Achebe. As a young man some decades ago, as I was about to embark on a journey overseas, I was scared. With limited funds and limited knowledge I was worried. How do you survive in a land far away from home, on your own? I was not much of a Christian then, but that evening I wandered the streets of my town, aimlessly, until I staggered into a local church. I sat at the back roll, praying I would not be noticed. I needed a word, I needed anything, some advice, anything I could take along on my upcoming journey. The preacher said: “Always remember whose child you are.” He wasn’t speaking to me in particular, but I felt those words were meant specially for me. The secret to success lies in knowing who you are, knowing your strengths . Do what you are good at and do it over and over again. More importantly, knowing whose child you are requires that you communicate with your Father, your creator, on a regular basis, accepting His teachings, love and mercy and expressing his values in whatever you do, to yourself and to those around you. That is where true happiness comes from. That much I learned. - Onaiwu |
