  Never Walk Alone

I was recently reading  "Startups that work" a book by Joel Kurtzman and Glenn Rifkin.  A title to one of the chapters just jumped out at me: "Never Walk Alone."  I was sitting in my car in front of one of the retail stores  where I have worked for the past 11 years.  It was a simple title, pure common sense, yet profound. I was transfixed.   I searched through, in my mind, through some of my most successful moments, both in my private and business life, and I knew this advice, this strategy, this counsel was so true.

The most successful points in my marriage, of almost 18 years,  happened when we worked together toward the same objective; when we communicated, collaborated, and shared a common goal.

The preparation for my trip overseas and stay abroad would not be as successful were it not for the close cooperation, strong alliance with my cousin, Sunny. We searched for all the information we could get, fed off each other's curiosity, energy, contacts, and brains.  I was the brains, by the way.  We had successfully used the same strategy in secondary school.  We were study partners, and for four years in a row, I was either first or second in the class.  Never third.  Third was not good enough.

Martin Luther King  Jr. never walked alone. His march through Selma, Birmingham, and on Washington - He was never alone. He had Rosa Parks, Jesse Jackson, a whole host of uncelebrated men and women behind him.  He had the support of all Black people and the good will of good whites.

Jesus Christ was never alone.  He had his twelve disciples.  More importantly, he always had the Father with him.  Two thousand years later  we celebrate and worship the Son because of his close alliance with the Father.

In business and your private life, create a partnership, a mutually beneficial association, preferably with someone or organization bigger than yourself. Put in your good work. And you will be surprised how far you can go.  That much I learned.- Onaiwu
