It is July 23rd 2007, I want to write about my dad; I
want to write about Ruth, the biblical figure; I want to write about my
day today; but I am not sure how I can tie it all together. Will I
achieve consistency in my delivery? Will the message be clear? I don't
know. This is why my dad is on my mind today: I spent the day mowing the
lawn; then went shopping for parts to fix the screen for my back porch. I
actually put a new screen on my back porch. No big technical feat, but I
felt wonderful. The spirit and zeal with which I take care of my
home, I acquired from my dad. The lack of inhibition toward anything
physical when it comes to home improvement came from watching and helping
my dad build our family home.
I feel like writing about Ruth, she exemplifies the
truest principle for success, beyond your wildest dreams. When you
combine altruism with divine principles, success happens. When you
worship God with all your heart and love your fellowman with the same
intensity, glory comes your way. When you carry the cross, the vertical
faith in God and the horizontal acceptance of commonality of humanity,
great things happen. That is what I learned from the story of
Ruth. Her husband died. Sad. Terrible. She could have
moved on and out on her own. But she didn't. She stuck to her aging
mother-in-law, Naomi, and took good care of her. She was not going to
abandon the family she had married into, irrespective of the
circumstances. She was not going to abandon the living God that she had
come to know. In response, God blessed her. Out of her
lineage, came David, Solomon, and Jesus himself.
Ruth was tried. We all will be tried. When
troubles come, and they will: When the clouds gather, and they will,
remember to believe. Remind yourself of those instances in your life, when
you thought you could not make it, but you did
Remember when you were behind bars and you feared you
would never get out. But you did. Remember the years when you feared you
would never complete your college education. But you did.
Remember when you dreamed of going abroad, and you never thought you could
finance it, survive it, even thrive. But you did.
Remember when you needed a life partner, a spouse,
and you had doubts about your personality, about your winning traits. But
somebody loved you enough to marry you.
These examples might not fit your particular situation,
but you sure can look back on your life, and remember when you were tried,
almost broken, but you are still here. You survived.
These are all evidences of your capacity to succeed.
More than that they are evidences of God's love, God's stake in your
personal success and happiness.
